The Real Cost of an Open Attic

Your attic costs you three ways. Only one shows up on your bill.

Most Charlotte homes leak conditioned air through the attic all year. You feel it three ways — an AC that works harder, moisture where you don't want it, and a higher bill every month. Enter your average monthly bill and we'll put a number on the one we can measure.

01

Your AC works harder

Every degree that escapes through the attic, your system has to make again — so it runs longer and wears out sooner. Ducts in a hot attic can lose over 20% of the cooled air before it ever reaches the room.

U.S. Department of Energy · ENERGY STAR

02

Moisture moves in

In our humid summers, an unsealed attic or crawl space can develop moisture problems and biological growth within weeks — damaging wood and quietly ruining the insulation you already have.

03

You pay for it monthly

The cooled air you're paying for leaks out the top of the house. That's the one below — the part we can estimate.

Air sealing and attic insulation can reduce heating and cooling costs by an average of 15%, or about 11% of your total energy bill, based on EPA ENERGY STAR data for combined air sealing and insulation improvements. Results vary by home, climate zone, and existing insulation level. The figure above is a conservative estimate based on the bill you entered. Savings vary. Three services. Done right.

Blown-In Attic Insulation

We install fiberglass or cellulose blown-in insulation in your attic, filling every gap and cavity to reach the R-49 level recommended by the Department of Energy for North Carolina. On every full install, before we blow a single bag, we seal the air leaks (around light fixtures, plumbing penetrations, and top plates) because insulation without air sealing is money left on the table. Proper air sealing and insulation can save up to ~15% on heating and cooling (EPA ENERGY STAR), though every home is different.

Crawl Space & Vapor Barrier

A wet or open crawl space drives up your energy bills, causes wood rot, and pulls humid air into your living space. We lay a heavy-duty, professional-grade vapor barrier across the crawl space floor to block ground moisture from rising into the structure, and fit fiberglass batt between the floor joists to hold conditioned air where it belongs. Every job includes a full inspection, drainage assessment, and attention to building code. No shortcuts, no surprises.

Fiberglass Batt Insulation

Hand-fitted fiberglass batt set snug between your crawl space floor joists — no gaps, no slumping, no air slipping through. It steadies the floors above, softens sound between levels, and keeps conditioned air where it belongs. Tony and Juan cut and place every piece themselves.

How We Work

Four steps. No surprises.

  1. Assessment

We measure your existing R-values and inspect the attic and crawl space ourselves. The plan starts with what's actually up there, not a guess from the driveway.

  2. Recommendations

You get a clear, written scope the same day — what we'll do, why it matters, and the exact price you'll pay. No pressure, no upsell.

  3. Installation

Tony and Juan do the work. We air seal first where it counts, then insulate to the R-49 level the Department of Energy recommends for North Carolina.

  4. Clean-Up & Walkthrough

We leave the space cleaner than we found it and walk the finished job with you, so you see exactly what changed and why it will hold up.

The Carolux Difference

Why homeowners choose us

Owner-Operated

Tony and Juan are on the job site for every project — not a crew you've never met. You get the owners' cell numbers, and they pick up the phone.

Air Sealing, Not Upsold

We include air sealing on every full installation, at no extra charge. Many contractors skip it or charge extra. It's the highest-impact step in the job, and the one that separates a real upgrade from a temporary fix.

2-Year Workmanship Guarantee

We stand behind our workmanship. If something we installed isn't done right within two years, we come back and make it right. No questions, no hassle. This covers our work, not pre-existing conditions in your home.

Inspector-Grade Diagnosis

Before Carolux, co-owner Tony spent years as a North Carolina home inspector. He reads the whole house — moisture, airflow, and where your money is actually escaping — before we recommend a thing.

Common Questions

Straight answers before you call

Attic blown-in insulation in Charlotte typically runs $1.00–$5.00 per square foot installed, depending on contractor type and scope. Specialty insulation companies generally fall in the $1.25–$2.50/sqft range. The exact cost depends on your attic's current R-value, whether removal is needed, and square footage. The estimate is free and in writing the same day.

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends R-49 for attics in North Carolina's climate zone. Homes below R-49 lose conditioned air year-round through the ceiling. Carolux installs to R-49 on every full attic job. Bringing an under-insulated attic up to R-49 is typically where homeowners feel the difference in comfort and in monthly energy bills.

Blown-in is loose fiberglass or cellulose blown across the attic floor, so it fills the gaps and odd corners that pre-cut pieces miss. Batt is fiberglass cut to fit between framing, hand-fitted between crawl space floor joists. Carolux uses whichever suits the space — and sometimes both in one home.

Yes — Carolux includes air sealing on every full insulation install at no extra charge. Before insulation goes in, leaks around light fixtures, plumbing penetrations, and wall top plates are sealed. Skipping that step is the most common reason insulation underperforms. Air sealing is not included on small top-off jobs; Carolux will say so upfront.

Carolux carries full general liability insurance. North Carolina does not require a contractor license for residential insulation work, so no insulation crew holds one for this scope. Carolux co-owner Tony Kermis is a former NC home inspector — the person who reads your attic knows what he is looking at.

Yes. The EPA's ENERGY STAR program estimates that air sealing plus proper insulation reduces heating and cooling costs by up to 15%. Results vary by home; they depend on your HVAC efficiency, habits, and how under-insulated your attic is now. Carolux provides an honest projection during the free energy audit. Savings vary. Find out why in the seller's fact sheet on R-values. Higher R-values mean greater insulating power.

Yes, for most Charlotte-area homes. North Carolina's humid summers push moisture up through bare-dirt crawl spaces and into the subfloor above, raising energy bills and accelerating wood rot. A heavy-duty vapor barrier keeps humidity down where it belongs. Carolux installs the liner and checks drainage in the same visit.

Carolux serves Charlotte, Huntersville, Pineville, Matthews, Mint Hill, Concord, Harrisburg, Gastonia, Belmont, Cramerton, Lowell, Mount Holly, and Stanley, NC — plus the surrounding Piedmont. If your town isn't on the list but you're near the metro, call (704) 228-2729. There's a good chance the area is covered.

Most attic insulation jobs wrap up in a single day. Crawl space work can run longer depending on size and moisture conditions found on-site. Both Carolux owners — Tony and Juan — are present from start to finish, and a walkthrough of the finished work happens before the crew leaves.
